When Nerds Travel 2016
Another year of traveling with big nerdy glasses on.
The nerdy universe is vast and ever-expanding. Each year is filled with an eclectic combination of comic-cons, fan fests, spectacular events and flat-out nerdy places. Come with us as we revisit our trek through a small slice of this nerdy universe.
January
The year of nerdy travels started with riding the Hogwarts Express at A Celebration of Harry Potter taking place in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Orlando. Once the sorting hat was put away, it was a quick hop over to Walt Disney World for the new Star Wars Launch Bay, still being in the mood for a little Force Awakens.
March
Many new comic-cons joined the nerdverse in 2016, including Silicon Valley Comic Con, spearheaded by nerd royalty Steve Wozniak and Stan Lee. Then the wonderfulness that is WonderCon packed their bags and moved to LA just for 2016 as well as a move to March.

Pi Day, March 14 (3.14)
May
May began with "May the 4th be with You," (Star Wars Day) included free comic books, yeah! (Free Comic Book Day), a nod to icon Douglas Adams (Towel Day), MSP ComiCon, and a trip to the islands for Amazing Hawaii Comic Con. A busy month for nerds — especially comic book nerds.

July
July is the pinnacle of the con season, even more so in 2016 with a first look at Rogue One, A Star Wars Story during Star Wars Celebration Europe which occurred just days before THE ultimate con — San Diego Comic-Con International (SDCC). Nerds flocked to the city-wide celebration of all things pop culture. Fandom at its best. A quick visit to Seattle for MoPOP’s (formerly EMP Museum) new Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds exhibit ended the month.
September
September 8, 1966 was the original air date of Star Trek, 50 years later we are still watching Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future. Wayward Nerd traveled to the 50th state to celebrate the 50 years of Star Trek at HawaiiCon. Dragon Con also had an anniversary this year, 30 years of celebrating fandom.
November
As snow was falling up north in November, time to chill out in the southwest with Tucson Comic Con, Supernatural Burbank and a new addition to the con scene, Indigenous Comic Con in Albuquerque debuted with amazing energy and heart.
February
Whovians united again for Gallifrey One in Los Angeles with three Doctors and a Master. Down the coast, San Diego Comic Fest honored Forrest Ackerman and re-created an Ackermansion. A visit to the Kirk vs Gorn filming location at Vasquez Rocks started our Star Trek 50th Anniversary celebration and finished the trip to California.
April
A bit of Harry’s world came to California with the opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Hollywood in April. Seattle’s Emerald City Comic Con expanded in 2016 adding a preview night. The month ended as nerds gathered around tables to play games.

International Tabletop Day
June
Even though it was HOT (118°) in the city, Phoenix Comicon attendance numbers exploded in June 2016. On display at Denver Comic Con was a Lucasfilm-created, life-sized, replica X-Wing Starfighter. Smaller Minnesota cons CONsole Room and CONvergence continued to delight fans.
August
Star Trek Las Vegas expanded to an epic five-day event to celebrate the five decades, to start August. The Dallas Comic Show exemplified that small cons could be mighty with guests like John Romita Jr. The concurrence of cons Supernatural Minneapolis and Star Trek Minneapolis reminded us that we are Friday people and sometimes #ShatHappens.
October
A plethora of choices pulled Wayward Nerd in all directions and double duty with Amazing Hawaii Comic Con, NerdCon: Stories, FallCON, CryptiCon, Phoenix Fan Fest, Alien Con, and Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con (formerly Stan Lee’s ComiKaze) all occurring in October.
December
Finally able to kick back in December, unpack bags, bake some nerdy goodness, and travel to the local movie theater to watch new Wizarding World, Star Wars and Doctor Who films. And of course, plan trips for 2017.
